Tyler William Price saw the world a little differently than most. He was an artist and an environmentalist, and he was as sweet and gentle as he was strong and brave.
Born in the mountains of New Mexico on September 28, 1977, he was diagnosed with a brain tumor just before his fifth birthday. After four surgeries and radiation treatment, Tyler was told he would be lucky to walk again or live past childhood. Not only did he learn to walk again, he ran. And like any other kid that moved to Davis, he soon learned to ride a bike. He graduated from Davis High School in 1996 and went on to earn an AA degree from Santa Rosa Junior College in Sustainable Agriculture, and a BA from New College in Ecology. Returning to Davis, he continued to pursue his interest in the environment and health, working at a plant nursery and the Davis Food Co-op. Most recently, he was working on his artwork and sketching, and with the help of a skilled teacher, had developed a regular pilates practice that brought him much strength and happiness.
Tyler was thriving in his life when he passed away suddenly and unexpectedly in his home this May. He took every opportunity to laugh, he loved to tease and joke with his family, and he was a loyal friend to those that took the time to get to know him. Loved as a son, a brother, an uncle, and a friend, his absence leaves a hole in us that will be impossible to fill.
Tyler’s pace was a little slower than most, but that afforded him the time to observe and appreciate the world around him, the plants and animals and small details that sometimes went unnoticed. It also made him a patient listener, and his calm and solid presence always brought us comfort.
